Growing Grapes
Cultivation of grapes that is used for producing wine is called viticulture. Like growing any other plant, growing grapevine includes certain tasks such as monitoring and controlling diseases and pests, fertilizing, irrigation, etc. which require certain knowledge and education but often also a lot of experience.
Before starting to plant the vines, one should be well informed over tasks that are required in vineyard management as well as over characteristics of different grape varieties. Variety of grapes does not only determine the flavor and type of wine but it also plays a crucial role in overall success. Each region has its own special characteristics and one does not have to be a scientist to know that every plant cannot be grown equally successfully everywhere. For that reason it is highly important to take into account also geographical and geological conditions as well as climate in particular region.
When determining which grape variety is the most appropriate for certain region and
which variety corresponds the desired type of wine the most only than one can start
growing grapes. Once the grape is planted it should be regularly monitored to be
able to control the diseases and pests. Highly important is also canopy management
on which also greatly depends both quality and quantity of the grapes. However,
besides taking care for proper grapevine growth and development a viticulturist also
has to observe the development and characteristics of the fruits and to decide when
is the best moment for harvesting. Viticulture is often a family business and the
methods of growing grape are transfered from generation to generation but if being a
beginner is highly recommendable to seek professional help.
